The next time they went out, it was Jack's turn. Just like Gus didn't try to outdo him by going the classy route, Jack didn't take Gus anywhere crazy. They alternated between elegant dining and some place that always had to be explained to Jack.

Gus's next choice was Hugo's. As they went in, Jack took in a smoke filled grotto with only two long tables meant for family style dining.

"Are we in someone's basement?" Jack asked.

"We might be," Gus told him.

"Should we call the fire department?"

The smoke was coming from the fire pit where meat was roasting on skewers over an open flame. The customers pointed at what they wanted, and the proprietor yelled out in a gravelly voice how long before it was done. Then his daughter translated his heavily accented English into English the customers could understand.

Unfortunately, the place was on the verge of becoming hip. Gus saw a lot of well-dressed young people eyeing the meat hungrily. That was kind of a disappointment. Gus was hoping for a more rustic crowd.

To give Jack the authentic experience, Gus made sure they sat across from a group of grandmothers in kerchiefs. They wanted to marry Jack to their granddaughters, of course. One of the trio of grandmothers was wise to Gus and Jack though. She shook her head at the other two and pointed from Gus to Jack. The old ladies argued about that for a while until Gus gave Jack a kiss to settle the argument. The one wise old lady smiled in triumph.

Afterward, Jack complained that he smelled like smoke, not just his clothes, his skin and his hair too. That just meant Gus had to eat him up. They came all over each other and made a mess of Jack's hotel sheets. To clean up, they jumped into the shower together.

As water ran down Jack's body in rivulets, Gus wanted to catch every one of them with his tongue. He wanted to bathe himself in the drops that came off Jack's body. While Gus licked him, the wet wall didn't let Jack hold on so he held on to Gus. Water ran over them warm and soothing as they kissed for a long time.
